Martha, Betty, was born to Ted and Bessy Sheldon in Shiregreen, Sheffield. She was the youngest of seven children and as you can imagine life was hard. Betty was always a comic, the school teacher once washed her mouth out with carbolic soap for saying, ‘polish it in the corner’ and with a smile saying there’s nowt wrong miss it’s only cleaning. Betty met the love of her life Edward Flanagan at 16 at Arthur Lees Steel Works, they were married when Betty was 19 shortly followed by the arrival of their first born Anthony. They lived at Betty’s mum and dads waiting for a council house to come up. 18 months later Patrica arrived on the scene, A few years passed and along came Terrence. They were now offered a house, it was a brand new steel prefab on Holgate Road, they moved in and shorty after Mary (no. 4) arrived. Edward now was working double shifts to keep his growing family. A few years later Teresa arrived, five years passed before Lynne arrived followed 3 years later by Lisa, seven kids later and their little family was complete. Betty was always up for a laugh and they spent many an hour in Ecclesfield Club and Colley Club, with their friends. Life was hard with not much money but Betty always made sure the kids had a good meal
